Dr Asha Jain, president ROGS said, “On an average a woman bleeds 35-40 years of the life which means she faces 420 periods. 5 days a month equals to 2 months per year which is actually 7 years in life span.  Women uses disposable sanitary pads and tampons during this time. These napkins are made up of plastic and chemicals which leads to infection and rashes giving rise to other health problems. These chemicals based sanitary pads are non-biodegradable, cannot be recycled or reused. They bloat in water and choke drain resulting to many environmental hazards. If these pads are burned then they release toxic chemicals. Not only this, 1/3 of the women who complain private parts infections & rashes, it’s because of these sanitary napkins.”

Dr Tabassum Dalla, Secretary ROGS said “People have to change their mentality to stop talking about the menstruation in public and treating it as sin. We want to encourage females to use reusable recycle bio-degradable pads which are comparatively less expensive. It will also be environment-friendly. If these pads are washed in cold water then one can escape from the fear of staining.

Dr Monica Pathak, treasurer, ROGS announced that “ ROGS has formed a public committee who will be taking initiative around the year for awareness of menstruation hygiene among the school and college going girls . This committee will emphasis on the importance for women and girls to hygienically manage their menstruation – in privacy, safety and with dignity.

The myths and beliefs have not only kept women in isolation but also kept them away from basic hygiene and sanitation during periods. It is no surprise that the lack of education and awareness has deprived whooping 88 percent of the menstruating India women of sanitary product access. With such a high percentage of women relying on unhygienic alternatives like pieces of rag, ash, sand, and husk, it is important to burst popular myths and superstitions.
