According to him the best time to fly might be in the middle
of your pregnancy — about weeks 14 to 28. This is when you're likely to feel
your best, and the risks of miscarriage and premature labor are the lowest. Restrict
travel of any type after 36 weeks of pregnancy.
Flying during pregnancy can slightly increase your risk
of thrombosis (blood clots) and varicose veins.
Wearing support stockings (not tights, which increase your risk of
developing thrush),) when you fly
will help keep your circulation flowing and relieve swollen veins. It's also
possible to buy knee-high socks which are specially designed for flying.
For maximum
protection, put the stockings or socks on before you get out of bed in the
morning and keep them on all day. Use of support stockings and
periodic movement of the lower extremities, avoidance of restrictive clothing,
occasional ambulation, and maintenance of adequate hydration.
Because severe air turbulence cannot be predicted and the
subsequent risk for trauma is significant should this occur, pregnant women
should be instructed to use their seatbelts continuously while seated. The
seatbelt should be belted low on the hipbones, between the protuberant abdomen
and pelvis. Several precautions may ease discomfort for pregnant air travelers.
For example, gas-producing foods or drinks should be avoided before scheduled
flights because entrapped gases expand at altitude Preventive anti-emetic
medication should be considered for women with increased nausea.
Air travel during pregnancy needs careful consideration. It
is worth considering:
- How important is your journey? Is it vital for work or personal reasons, or is it for recreation?
- What type of flight are you planning? Is it a long-haul or a short-hop flight? (Longer journeys have greater implications during pregnancy)
- What likely medical facilities will be available at your destination? Will they be adequate if problems arise with your pregnancy?
- Does the country have infectious diseases that require vaccinations? (If so, you will need to discuss the benefits and risks of these vaccinations for yourself and your baby)
If you have to travel by air, the middle three months of pregnancy are the safest and most comfortable ones to fly.
